Humana began in 1961 as a nursing home and evolved in 1972 from a chain of nursing homes into a hospital when founder David Jones and Wendell Cherry acquired a hospital. In 1980, Humana (formally known as “Extendicare”) became the world’s largest hospital in the world. Humana also played a role in the development of the artificial heart with Dr. Robert Jarvik and Dr. William DeVries. In 1984, Humana developed a new division to create and market health insurance products.

Humana Medicare Advantage Plans
Humana Gold Choice PFFS is a Medicare Advantage Private Fee for Service plan that allows you to see almost any doctor you choose. Benefits include prescription drug coverage, no copayment for preventive services including cancer screening and routine immunizations as well as an affordable, low monthly premium.
Humana Gold Plus HMO is a Medicare Advantage Health Maintenance Organization plan that offers broad coverage. Benefits include prescription drug coverage, no or an affordable monthly premium, choice of primary care physician in the plan network, and affordable copayments for doctor visits and annual routine physicals.
Humana Choice PPO is a Medicare Advantage Preferred Provider Organization plan that gives you freedom to choose which doctors, specialists, and hospitals you visit. Benefits include affordable monthly plan premiums, referral free visits to specialists, prescription drug coverage, and emergency coverage anywhere in the world.
Humana Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans RX Plans
Humana Prescription Drug plans include the PDP Standard, the PDP Enhanced, and the PDP Complete. The PDP Standard is the basic plan if your need for prescription drugs is minimal. PDP Standard provides basic drug coverage for people with Medicare. The PDP Enhanced plan is for those who are considered “in the middle” and need to take care of a few chronic conditions. The PDP Complete plan is for those who live with several chronic conditions and need a comprehensive plan that helps lower the costs of prescription drugs.

Humana Medicare Advantage Plans Very Popular
While other health insurers have been hurt by declines in employer-sponsored insurance enrollment, and Humana’s commercial business results did worse than anticipated, Humana Medicare Advantage Plan results for the fourth quarter of 2009 were better than expected.
Michael B. McCallister, president and chief executive of Humana, summed up 2009 as success for Humana despite a “challenging environment,” and added the company’s outlook for 2010 “Looking ahead, we see multiple revenue growth opportunities across our spectrum of products for 2010.”
While Humana Medicare Advantage plans gained 5 percent new members compared to 2008, the amount of members in its stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plans dropped by more than 1 million in 2009.
Humana is offering more than 100 Medicare Advantage plans in 2010, including the flexible affordable Humana Gold Choice PFFS. Humana Gold Choice® is a Medicare Advantage Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plan. That means you can see almost any doctor you choose, as long as the provider accepts Humana’s terms and conditions of payment. Most Humana Gold Choice Private Fee-for-Service plans combine all the benefits of Original Medicare, prescription drug coverage and many extras into one simple, easy-to-use plan.
The Humana Gold Choice Plan is available to anyone enrolled in both Part A and Part B of Medicare through age or disability.
